Many people think that in the everyday world, we have to be rational. When it comes to matters of religion and spiritual things, however, they believe that reason can be suspended. They seem to think that reason is anti-spiritual. They are mistaken. The plain fact is that reason is a spiritual faculty. A look at the Universe around us reveals that reason allows us to comprehend and benefit from our experiences. The spiritual is not irrational. Anything spiritual should be practical.
The myths of the great European cultures have several things in common. One of these is the power of reason. The heroes of mythic tales win because they apply reason to solving their problems. Even if a mythic character has great strength or some fantastic ability, he first uses rational thought to plan where he can use it to its best advantage, The intervention of supernormal powers and deities, if it factors into a mythic tale at all, still requires some use of intellect before it is bestowed.
