India forbids TV from airing shows on the ‘occult’

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued an advisory to all TV channels against telecasting programmes promoting superstitions and blind belief. Of late, such programmes are frequently aired on many channels, especially Hindi and regional language channels, in order to garner TRPs.

Many civil society organisations and media critics have alleged that such programmes promote irrationality and hinder the development of scientific temper. The missive issued by the ministry is the first step in alerting the channels against any violations. Officials said the advisory is likely to have a sobering effect on the TV channels promoting superstition and occult practices.
