Paddy Power, the Irish bookmakers, has paid £10,000 to have its name on the new box in Our Lady & St Etheldreda church in the racing town of Newmarket, Suffolk, after it was approached by the priest.
Frankie Dettori, the jockey, who was married in the church, performed the official opening ceremony yesterday.
A senior church official said he was not aware of any previous sponsorship of a confession box, either by a betting firm or any other business.
The Dublin-based bookmakers, which has 200 betting offices in Ireland and almost 100 in Britain, and a turnover of £2 bn, said it was “delighted” with the arrangement.
