Pat Robertson built an empire through his religious ministry and television programming. He has global name recognition. He has the infrastructure in place to accomplish great things. Sadly, what he has accomplished is a great collection of nutty assertions that leave rational people speechless.

This week, the 79-year-old former presidential candidate and televangelist weighed in on the devastating earthquake in Haiti that left untold thousands dead. In a television interview, Robertson waved off the tragedy, saying Haiti had “made a pact with the devil” in exchange for being liberated from the oppressive French rule of “you know, Napoleon the third or whoever. “Ever since, they’ve been cursed with one thing or another.”

Natural disaster isn’t the only thing Robertson will spin to serve his own ends. On the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Robertson and the late Rev. Jerry Falwell agreed that the attack was “brought on” by “pagans, abortionists, feminists, gays and lesbians.”
