Newcastle Central Library to get carving of Tyne god

A symbol of the Tyne which has looked down on life around the river for over 150 years is to be part of Newcastle’s latest landmark building.

When the city’s new Central Library opens on June 7 it will include the carved wooden head of the river god Tyne.

The carving has been loaned by North Tyneside printing and media firm Elanders, which inherited the head through a series of company mergers. The original stone version of the Tyne god was one of eight representations of English rivers which decorated the front of Somerset House in London when it was rebuilt in 1786.
