FREDERICK — From a time to engage in lighthearted mischief to the worship of darker religious forces, Halloween has meant different things to different people over the years. For many kids, the holiday is merely a chance to hoard as much candy as possible, but it’s an affront to some children’s and their parents’ spiritual values. Some churches still strongly oppose Halloween as a holiday glorifying witchcraft and Satan; other churches and parishioners have more liberal views, turning it into a family-oriented day.
Monica Peeke of Frederick said her family sometimes participates in a harvest/fall festival at her church. The Peekes are Seventh-day Adventists. Sometimes they celebrate with neighbors they know or get together and play games as a family.
