Incest, paganism, bloody violence and miraculous anti-ageing treatments: the goddess of love still moves in mysterious ways on Cyprus. Whatever became of Aphrodite? Beautiful, brazen and beguiling, the goddess of love had the ancients twisted around her fragrant little finger for two millenniums before they became unravelled, but where did she go? Cyprus still calls itself Aphrodite’s Isle, but Cypriots seem to have done little to preserve her reputation. They allow her to turn tricks for tourists in the island’s resorts, prostituting her legacy among the karaoke bars and meze restaurants, and giving her name to the kind of nightclubs only Russians think are classy. Fortunately, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) could help. It has created Aphrodite’s Cultural Route, a self-guided tour “in the footsteps of the goddess”.
