Exorcism, or the casting out of demons, is an ancient practice. The Bible includes accounts of Jesus driving evil forces out of individuals. According to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, a person possessed by a demon may speak in an unknown language, know about things that are distant or hidden or have abnormal strength. Other possible symptoms include an aversion to spiritual signs, including the name of God, Jesus, sacred images and church rites. In the case of a suspected demonic possession, the bishop of a diocese has the authority to appoint a priest/exorcist to investigate the matter and to conduct an exorcism, if warranted.
