Acadians remember painful history

Earl Muise bowed his head and placed a small bouquet of white lilies on the base of a waterfront monument, thinking only of his unknown ancestors forced out of the country hundreds of years ago.

Under a blazing hot sun Thursday, the man recalled how his distant family was one of thousands packed on to ships and told to leave their Acadian settlements, their homes seized and their possessions burned. “It was emotional,” said Muise, moments after laying the flowers at a new monument commemorating the 250th anniversary of the deportation of the Acadians from Nova Scotia.
