Eagle kill casts eye on illegal market

The slaughter of at least 40 eagles is a reminder of the age-old adage of supply and demand and there appears to be a growing market for feathers and talons of the majestic birds. Like ivory tusks, bear gall bladders and other prized animal parts, a particular type of eagle feather can fetch as much as $500 from unscrupulous buyers, say experts.

In the past month, 40 eagle carcasses were discovered on a native reserve in North Vancouver, prompting the government to assign a task force under the Conservation Officer Service to investigate. Several groups, including the native band on whose land the remains were found, have offered a total of $10,000 in reward money for the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
