Millions of Sikhs flock to Golden Temple

India’s president covered his head with a white scarf and walked barefoot into the Golden Temple today, joining hundreds of thousands of Sikhs in the once a century celebration of the installation of Sikhism’s holy book at their most sacred shrine.

President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam stood barefoot with his hands folded for 20 minutes in front of the Guru Granth Sahib installed 400 years ago at the white marble, gold-domed Golden Temple in the northern Indian city of Amritsar.

The celebrations culminate tomorrow, with 2.5 million devotees from across the globe expected to re-enact the installation ceremony by parading through the city behind a gold-plated palanquin bearing the book, said Dalmegh Singh, secretary of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee, which runs India’s Sikh shrines.
