A dwelling place for deities

Amid the buzz of saws and the shrill of drills, human hands do the gods’ work along Route 59 near Bartlett. The efforts of more than 3,000 volunteers and workers who have labored for years across three continents will culminate in the dedication of a white marble palace fit for Hindu deities.

Next week, the largest Shikhar Mandir, or Hindu temple, in North America will open in the suburbs. It belongs to the Swaminarayans, a Hindu sect that is based primarily in the state of Gujarat, in western India, but has spread worldwide, building majestic temples in London, Nairobi, Kenya, and most recently in Houston, as well as Bartlett.
