A budding shaman’s journey

Thai “Cheng” Vang calls Dec. 4, 1996, the greatest day of his life. He was 11 when he boarded the plane that took him, along with nine brothers and sisters and his parents, from the refugee camp at Ban Vanai, Thailand, to Appleton.

The snowy December weather didn’t daunt Vang’s spirits when he arrived, even though he stepped off the plane barefoot, wearing only shorts and a T-shirt. “I was ecstatic. I had finally made it to the land of opportunity. As long as I can remember I thought, ‘If I can dig a hole, I’ll get to America someday.’ “
