Like gangs of looters, voracious rabbits are already munching through Ottawa’s early herbs, shrubs and perennials as appetizers for the vegetables that will grow later. Biologists say eastern cottontails are near the peak of their population cycle and are spreading because of ideal conditions their human neighbours are providing.
Cottontails prefer open areas with some cover and easily available food. And humans have been encouraging the rabbit population by clearing land to build suburbs with back yard gardens, according to Donna Naughton, a biologist with the Canadian Museum of Nature.
