Pagans beat ban on Booze

A booze ban at a pagan festival has been lifted amid claims it breached revellers’ human rights. The annual Beltane Festival in Edinburgh attracts more than 12,000 people to the city’s Calton Hill.

It was cancelled last year after organisers fell out with the city council over restrictions. This year’s festival, due to go ahead tonight, was only given the go-ahead after the council imposed an alcohol ban.

But legal experts for the Beltane Fire Society argued the ban breached human rights laws. Toast and an emergency meeting of councillors agreed to allow ‘moderate use of alcohol’.
