Interim Mohawk police chief set to take office in Kanestake

Tensions are high in the Mohawk community of Kanesatake as a new interim chief is getting ready to take over policing. Eddy Thompson, a 33-year-old special constable, has been chosen by Grand Chief James Gabriel to take responsibility of policing under an agreement involving Quebec and Ottawa.

Gabriel was forced to flee the community in January after his house was burned downed when he tried to bring in his own force. Since then, a group of peacekeepers from the outside has been handling policing, but that’s now coming to an end.
