Myths spark imagination

Two seventh-grade language arts teachers at the Barkalow Middle School donned togas for their annual “Wall of Gods, Heroes and Villains” student presentations. Teachers Leslie Rubins and Carol Ewig believe that getting their students directly involved is a more creative and fascinating way of introducing them to mythology.

As part of the project, students were divided into groups of four or five to research and select a mythical god/goddess or hero/heroine to explore in detail. Once they had selected a character, students were assigned to read at least two myths in which that character played a major role. They then chose one of the stories as their focus and summarized it individually and collectively.
