Deer overpopulation hurts itself and forest it forages

On a cold, icy day in early February, I followed a trail through a mature forest of beech, yellow birch, red and sugar maple, hemlock and white pine. There was about a foot of snow on the ground, capped with a hard, fresh crust of ice. The footprints and trails of white-tailed deer were everywhere, leading in most cases to any plant that emerged above the snowpack. I followed several tracks into the forest in order to learn some of the items in the deer’s diet. The answer: just about everything within reach.
