Panicked cat owners assured there’s no cause for alarm

That’s the advice of Vancouver veterinarians, the SPCA and the Vancouver Humane Society following publication in the research journal Nature of a Dutch study that found household cats can carry the SARS virus without getting sick, can pass the virus on to other animals and perhaps even give it to people.

June Humphreys, the cat spay and neuter campaign coordinator for the Vancouver Humane Society, says the organization has received many panicked calls from cat owners worried their favourite felines may in fact be walking severe acute respiratory syndrome factories.

Callers wondered whether it was safe to touch their pets or if they should get rid of their cats, Humphreys said.
