First wind-power project among winners

Hydro green initiative setting off $800m in construction projects

By Ian Bailey

B.C. Hydro has agreed to buy power from 16 independent power producers across the province — setting off $800 million in construction of hydro projects, a plant that will burn methane gas seeping from a landfill site and the province’s first wind-power project.

“We’re very pleased . . . We are a pioneer in B.C.,” said Win Stothert, president of Stothert Power Corp., one of the two partners building a $90-million operation that will consist of 30 to 35 high-tech windmills near the north Vancouver Island community of Holberg.

The company has plants producing energy through four different sources for B.C. Hydro, but the windmill scheme is a first for it.
