The ancient Greeks thought dreams were gods who sneaked into their houses through keyholes and spoke to them in the night.

And dreamers have had their place in history “” from books to battles to the Bible. One of the more famous dreams may be that of the Egyptian pharaoh who dreamed of seven skinny cattle and seven fat ones and whose dream was interpreted by the Biblical Joseph.

But modern research into dreams didn’t begin until 1900 when Sigmund Freud wrote “The Interpretation of Dreams,” which said dreams represented unconscious sexual and aggressive wishes and cemented the idea in most people’s minds that snakes in dreams always had something to do with penises.

Still, according to Tonay, no one really knows exactly why we dream.
