A historic chapel resurrected

Hospital sanctuary gets a facelift and opens its doors to all faiths

By Gerard Young

If the brick and wood walls could talk, they would probably whisper. But they don’t talk, they listen.

The walls at Royal Jubilee Hospital’s Pemberton chapel for more than a century have listened to pleas, vows and prayers of thanks. At other times they only heard the sounds of silence.

Since the chapel reopened June 20 after renovations, its guest book has been filled with signatures from patients, family members, staff, nursing school alumni and visitors.

They describe the atmosphere as beautiful, serene, peaceful, comforting, hopeful and even “neat.”
