Ratified books not error-free

Surrey school committee OK’s two new same-sex books

By Matthew Ramsey

Less than a month after rejecting three picture books depicting children of same-sex couples for grammar and spelling mistakes, Surrey school board has approved for kindergarten and Grade 1 students two titles which contain some of the same errors.

The Surrey School District Standing Advisory Committee on Family Life approved the books June 25. Who’s In A Family and ABC: A Family Alphabet Book both depict children of same-sex couples.

Mary Polak, chair of the Surrey school board, said the newly approved books are “substantially different” than the three — Asha’s Mums, Belinda’s Bouquet and One Dad, Two Dads, Brown Dads, Blue Dads — rejected by the board earlier this month for not fitting the district criteria as learning aids because of poor grammar, spelling and continuity.

The three books were initially banned in 1997. The Supreme Court of Canada ruled last December that the district did not have the right to ban books on religious grounds.
